On the morning of October 5, 2022, as Paul Vaughn prepared to take his children to school, he heard ferocious banging on the door. Three armed FBI agents were outside, shouting at him and terrorizing his family. A fourth agent had already detained three of his children on the side of the house. Vaughn was hauled away in handcuffs.

Just weeks earlier, roughly a dozen FBI agents raided the home of Mark Houck. In tactical gear with guns drawn, they screamed at him to come out and hauled him away in handcuffs as his wife and children watched in horror. His wife, Ryan-Marie, later suffered three miscarriages, and the children were left so traumatized they couldn’t sleep in their own beds for months.

Both Vaughn and Houck were charged under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act for peacefully protesting near abortion clinics. The FACE Act is a Clinton-era law that makes it a felony to “use force with the intent to injure, intimidate or interfere with” anyone providing abortion …
