A doctor cast the first vote for American independence.
Josiah Bartlett was a country physician from New Hampshire. He’d already successfully managed a diphtheria outbreak with an early, innovative use of Peruvian bark. New Hampshire voted first in the roll call, being the northernmost colony, and tradition says that Bartlett’s “aye” made “the rafters shake.” He signed the Declaration second, right after John Hancock.
